If a picture paints a thousand words, how many impressions can it make on Facebook?
We all know how powerful visuals are on social media. Major social channels like Facebook and Instagram rely heavily on pictures, videos and graphics and will reward users who push out visual content.
Not all marketers are graphic designers, and vice versa, so it can be difficult to design an eye-catching graphic for your brand – especially with the demand of content creation online.
Luckily there is a solution: Canva!
Canva is a (mostly) free easy-to-use software that was designed with social media managers in mind. Many of you have probably used Canva or the very least heard of it through the social media grapevine. The reason why Canva is such a fan favourite is that it has most of your desired functionalities of pro design software but laid out in a much simpler format.
Canva has thousands of templates to choose from that are all customizable if creativity isn’t your strong suit. Or you can easily start from scratch and upload all your brand’s content so you build something personalized.
One of the main reasons why social media marketers should be using Canva is their design library. Canva has laid out the correct dimensions for all social media posts and graphics in one place. So no more configuring dimensions from Facebook to Instagram, Canva has it all covered.
Another great feature from Canva is its layering tool. Those who regularly use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator know how important layers are to making a design. Well so does Canva and they’ve implemented a much more basic layering tool, but it’s all you need when creating quick content.
You can also create shadow font easily using the layering tool by stacking identical text almost on top of each other and changing the top colour to create a lifted effect.

At HeyOrca, we use the team feature when sharing and collaborating on work. When you join a team in Canva it acts as a mini drive where you can store all your shared content. One neat feature of using teams or Canva for Work is that you can store your brand colours in their database. So then your signature colours are readily available when you’re working on a design.
These are just a few tips with using Canva for social media marketing, but in reality, this is just the surface of what Canva offers. The features are endless and they seem to keep growing to stay current with social media trends. For a free platform, Canva offers the most-user friendly yet feature-rich design editor we’ve seen to date. HeyOrca is a big fan of Canva and would recommend this platform to anyone working in social media marketing.
